Selecting A Dog

After you have thoughtfully considered whether you are ready to adopt a dog, including understanding the responsibilities & commitment, determined the type of dog that would be best in your home, prepared for the costs of owning a dog, lined up the supplies you will need, and pre-planned their homecoming, then it is time to pay a visit to the Shelter!

  • The Shelter is open to the public six days a week.  CLICK HERE for our hours.
  • If you are visiting to see a particular dog that you saw on Petfinder, our Facebook page, or on our website, please be sure to call in advance to make sure that dog is still available.
  • Feel free to ask for help from our staff in determining which of our adoptable dogs may fit your needs.
  • You can view all of our dogs at your leisure, but KEEP YOUR HANDS AND FINGERS outside of their cages.
  • If you want to interact with one of our adoptable dogs, you must first have an approved adoption application on file.
  • If you don’t find the dog for you, but will continue to visit us until you do, we recommend that you complete an adoption application.  Once approved, your adoption application remains valid and on file for six months.
  • Please plan your visit with the understanding that the adoption application process must begin at least one hour before our scheduled closing time.

The Application Process

We take the adoption process very seriously.  We strive to ensure that each dog finds the proper family and that each family finds a dog that will match their lifestyle.  For an adoption to be successful, you must truly understand the level of care and commitment required for a successful adoption.  We make an emotional commitment to each dog in our care.  We have an obligation to ensure that the new relationship between your family and your new companion will thrive for a lifetime.

Upon completion of an adoption application, along with providing a valid drivers license or state ID, it can take from one to three days for our review and verification process.  Upon review of your application, we may request additional information or require follow up visits to the Shelter.  The Shelter reserves the right to decline any adoption application at any time and for any reason.

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF ADOPTING, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU COMPLETE AN APPLICATION IN ADVANCE TO SAVE YOU TIME AFTER YOU HAVE SELECTED A DOG.  Approved applications are held on file for six months.

Adoption Fees

The adoption fee for a dog is $100.  If the dog you are adopting has not been spayed or neutered, you will be provided with a spay/neuter voucher that is honored by most veterinarians in Porter County.  Please note that the voucher ONLY covers the spay/neuter procedure.  It does NOT cover any ancillary costs or additional costs that arise from the procedure.  Adoption fees can be paid by CHECK, DEBIT OR CREDIT CARD.  Cash is not accepted at the Shelter.

The Adoption Agreement

After you have selected a dog, your adoption application is approved, and the adoption fee is paid, we require that you sign an Adoption Agreement which is a legally binding contract between you and the Shelter, and outlines your obligations as a responsible pet owner.

Please note that the Adoption Agreement REQUIRES that you take your new dog to a veterinarian for a wellness check and necessary vaccinations within thirty days of the adoption.  Further, if the dog you have adopted has not been spayed or neutered, you are also required to have a veterinarian perform the procedure within thirty days of adoption.  It is your obligation to provide the Shelter proof of the wellness check, vaccinations and spay/neuter.  You will be provided with any medical records that the Shelter may have for your dog.

If You Live Outside of Porter County:  We do allow adoptions to out of county residents, but if the dog you have chosen has not been spayed or neutered, we do require that they are spayed or neutered before the dog leaves the Shelter.  Please allow up to 5 additional days before your new dog can go home with you.
