Victims Assistance Services

As a crime victim, dealing with the criminal justice system may create a sense of frustration and helplessness. It is hard to understand laws that constrain the prosecutor, judges, and police. We are available to help you understand the criminal justice system and to help you get through this difficult time.

Porter County Victim Assistance Unit is currently looking for college undergrad students for the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer Semesters. Min of 15 hours a week is best to gain a great understanding of the Victim Advocates' role in the criminal justice system. There are a total of five Victim Advocates among two offices located in Portage and Valparaiso.

Mission for Victim Assistance Unit- to help guide crime victims through the criminal justice system, seeking their input and keeping them informed of the status of their cases; to aggressively pursue restitution and Victims compensation for crime victims; and to assist crime victims in obtaining additional resources.

The duties of an intern include:

-Screen Files

-Data entry

-Tracking cases

-Accompanying victim to court/trial

-Help filling out Protective Orders/No Contact orders

-Work directly with crime victim(s)

-Observed interaction between advocate and crime victim

An intern shall gain after completion of program:

-Knowledge of victim rights

-How to identify crime victim(s) in a criminal case

-Knowledge of court proceedings

-Understanding plea agreements

-Victim Compensation Benefits
