Here are some highlights of the 2016 budgets for Porter County:
  • The tax rate to fund county government will be 43.94 cents, the third year in a row that the county's rate has declined.
  • Most full-time county employees will receive a $1,000 raise.
  • A net of four full-time positions were cut from the General Fund.
  • County employee health insurance will be funded from the same mix of sources as in 2015.

The following positions were eliminated from the General Fund budgets: Animal Shelter assistant director, two Voter Registration second deputies, Weights & Measures deputy, Commissioner Facilities Services Assistant, and Superior Court 6 secretary. Two other positions moved into the General Fund from other budgets, resulting in a net reduction of four full-time positions. 

The following General Fund budgets ended up lower than in 2015. These were the budgets for: Auditor, Portage Township Assessor, Circuit Court, Superior Court 6, Human Resources, Voter Registration, and Weights & Measures.

How to view any local government budget

Local government units -- from the county to schools to townships -- are required to post their adopted budgets on the state's informational portal, Gateway. From this site, you can access any budget for any taxing unit -- anywhere in Indiana.

To get there, go to https://gateway.ifionline.org/default.aspx. From there, you can choose from a variety of local government financial information. One way to access a specific budget is to click on "Report Builder." Then choose the budget data you wish to access.
