Food Service Division
Food Services Division
The Porter County Health Department Food Services Division currently performs routine inspections of over 800 establishments completing 1,800+ inspections per year. This includes, but is not limited to, restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores, taverns, factories, schools, and bakeries. These inspections ensure food handlers are safely preparing foods as well as maintaining a clean and sanitary environment.

Temporary Inspections
In addition to routine inspections, temporary event inspections are also performed. The division attends over 25 events each year including fairs, festivals, and markets completing over 500 temporary inspections.

Preventing Foodborne Illness
All inspections are completed in order to prevent foodborne illness. Foodborne illness is estimated to result in as many as 76 million cases of disease in the United States each year. The over 300,000 victims of foodborne illness encounter discomfort or lost time on the job as a result of nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

For some, foodborne illness may causes more serious or life threatening problems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 5,000 needless deaths occur annually as result of people becoming ill from microorganisms in food.
