Marriage Licenses
Applying for a Marriage License
Location
Couples who wish to be married must both appear in person to apply for a marriage license in the Clerk's Office, Records Department, second floor of the Porter County Courthouse.

Applications are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Courthouse is closed on weekends and all legal holidays. Please allow yourself at least 20 minutes to complete the application.

If you have an appointment to be married by a judge, please arrive at least 1 hour prior to complete the application process.

Fee
  • Indiana resident: $18.00 cash/credit ($3.50 service fee applies for credit)
  • Residents of another state: $60.00 cash/credit ($3.50 service fee applies for credit)

Items Required for a Marriage License
Effective April 26, 2005, premarital examination certificates are no longer required for women. A blood test is not required for either party.

The following identification is required for each individual:

  • A valid operator's license or other state issued photo ID with date of birth and current address is required when you apply.
  • If the address is incorrect, please provide us with a current utility bill (water, cable, NIPSCO) or mortgage or lease papers with your name and current address.

Applicants under the age of 22 must also present a certified copy of their state issued birth certificate. Foreign birth certificates MUST be translated into English and notarized.

Residence
A marriage license shall be obtained from the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the county of residence of either party who intend to marry. If neither individual is a resident of Indiana, the marriage license is to be obtained in the county which the marriage will take place. (IC 31-11-4-3).

Age
Applicants at least 18 years of age may marry without special consent. According to IC 31-11-2, persons who are 17 years of age must apply for the license with both parents or the person with legal custody who must sign the consent portion of the application. Individuals 16 years of age or younger must petition the Court as shown under IC 31-11-1-6.

Performing the Marriage
Judge Chidester, available at 219-465-3668, and Judge Harper, available at 219-465-3425, are available to perform weddings within the courthouse and offsite.

License Expiration
A marriage license expires 60 days after is is issued and is only valid in the State of Indiana. You will receive the license the same day you apply.
