Adult Probation
Porter County Probation Office
The Porter County Adult Probation Office serves the six Courts of Porter County. There are currently 24 Probation Officers, including the Chief, Assistant Chief and two Supervisors. There are also two full-time Probation Clerks handling caseload management for those persons placed on non-reporting supervision.

Duties of a Probation Officer
A Probation Officer shall:
  • Assist the court in transferring supervision of a person on probation to a court in another jurisdiction
  • Assist the courts in making pretrial release decisions
  • Assist the courts, prosecuting attorneys, and other law enforcement officials in making decisions regarding the diversion of charged individuals to appropriate non-criminal alternatives
  • Bring to the court's attention any modification in the conditions of probation considered advisable
  • Collect and disburse money from persons under  supervision according to the order of the court, and keep accurate and complete accounts of those collections and disbursements
  • Conduct prehearing and presentence investigations and prepare reports as required by law
  • Cooperate with public and private agencies and other persons concerned with the treatment or welfare of persons on probation, and assist in obtaining services from those agencies and persons
  • Furnish each person placed on probation under supervision a written statement of the conditions of  probation and give instruction regarding those conditions
  • Keep accurate records of cases investigated and assigned by the court and have the records available for the court upon request
  • Notify the court when a violation of a condition of probation occurs
  • Perform other duties required by law or as directed by the court
  • Supervise and assist persons on probation consistent with conditions of probation imposed by the court
