Steps for obtaining a Residential Well Permit

  1. To obtain a Residential Well Permit, a customer is required to visit the Porter County Health Department, Environmental Health Division
  2. The following items are required:

    • A site plan, drawn to scale, showing the location of house, proposed well, and existing septic tank (and laterals) or sewer line
    • Permanent address for site in question

  3. Fees and Information

    • Residential Well Permit fee: $25.00
    • Wells must be located at least 50 feet from a septic tank and septic system laterals.

Steps For Obtaining A New Construction Well And Septic Permit:

  1. Obtain a soil report for the property in question

    • Private, certified soil scientists must be hired to obtain a soil report (see Soil Scientists in local telephone book for names and numbers)
    • Major and Minor Subdivisions will most likely have completed soil reports on file at the Porter County Health Department (ski to #2, request Septic/Well Field Investigation Report)
    • Septic systems must be located over an actual soil boring. New soil borings are required if septic system is moved to a different location.

  2. Submit soil report to Porter County Health Department Environmental Health Division and request a Septic/Well Field Investigation Report
  3. A Septic/Well Field Investigation Report will be issued within approximately 2-4 days. It will contain three major sections:

    • Disposal System (consists of septic system specifications)
    • Requirements for Permit Issuance (all documents checked are required for permitting)
    • Site Considerations (site specific notes and conditions)

  4. To obtain the Well and Septic Permit, customer is required to visit the Porter County Health Department, Environmental Health Division. Health Department staff will review documents (see Requirements For Permit Issuance)
  5. If documents are not approved, then changes will be noted. Customer should make needed changes and revisit the Porter County Health Department, Environmental Division
  6. If documents are approved, then a well and septic permit will be issued at time of review.

    • Well Permit fee: $25.00
    • Septic Permit fee: $182.00
    • Total for a Well and Septic Permit: $207.00
    • Septic permits expire two years from date of issuance. Well permits have no expiration date.

Steps for obtaining a Residential Repair Permit:

  1. Contact Porter County Health Department, Environmental Division, and request an onsite visit from Health Inspector.
  2. Health Inspector will visit and review site

    • A soil test may be requested at this time.
    • A private, certified soil scientist must be hired to obtain a soil report (see Soil Scientists in a local telephone book for names and numbers)
    • Septic systems must be located over an actual soil boring
    • Submit soil report to Porter County Health Department Environmental Health Division

  3. A "Repair Permit Field Investigation Report" will be issued within approximately 2-4 days. It will contain two major sections:

    • Disposal System (consists of septic system repair specifications)
    • Site Considerations (site specific notes and conditions)

  4. To obtain a Residential Repair Permit, customer is required to visit the Porter County Health Department, Environmental Health Division

    • Residential Repair Permit fee: $168.00
    • Residential Repair Permits have no expiration date
