| Initially the Indiana IV-D Offices were only charged with establishing paternities, establishing support orders and collecting current or back support on behalf of minor children. In the late 1990's the federal government decided that it was also important for the States to establish and/or enforce medical provisions. However, the collection of medical amounts was, and still is, considered a sideline to the collection of actual child support. In other words, support is the #1 priority but so long as it is being pursued then medical costs should also be pursued. However, collection of medical costs alone normally will not be done. At the present time, some other states will not enforce medical provisions. Your child is legally entitled to health insurance coverage, if it is available at a reasonable cost to either parent. If the non-custodial parent is ordered to provide health insurance coverage for your child and has not, we can ask the Court to compel that the insurance be provided, if we are also pursuing collection of child support. If the non-custodial parent is ordered to reimburse you for a portion of medical expenses you have incurred for your child, we can ask the Court to compel the absent parent to reimburse you, if we are also pursuing collection of child support. You will need to provide your caseworker with the completed Medical Reimbursement Request form, with copies of all listed expenses attached. You will also need to provide proof that the non-custodial parent received your request for reimbursement and has not complied within a reasonable amount of time.
